Other pubs which are not gay but deserve a special mention:

Cloth Ear
The Cloth Ear is The Merchant Hotel’s comfortable public bar. The warm and welcoming interior provides the ideal environment to relax and enjoy yourself in style.
Waring Street, Belfast (2 minutes walk from the LGBT Centre) – Tel: 028 9026 2719.

The John Hewitt Bar
This is not the sort of pub to hold discos, but is well worth a visit and located in the centre of Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter (the traditional gay district). Live music five nights during the week: New Orleans Jazz on Fridays and Traditional Irish Sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. New artists are promoted on Thursdays.
51 Donegall Street, Belfast – Tel: 028 9023 3768.

Sunflower Bar
Sunflower is a simple corner pub, it is free of gimmicks or themes, and it is one of the few remaining. It is instantly recognisable by the security cage on its front door, a relic from 1980’s Belfast. While the cage is no longer needed for security reasons it has been kept and preserved as part of the city’s social history. Little did the men who erected it think that one day it would become a tourist attraction – just a small example of how much Belfast has evolved in recent times. Music is very much part of the pub’s life: Traditional, Appalachian and Gypsy Swing sessions feature weekly in the bar while folk and bluegrass are regularly featured upstairs. The upstairs room is also home to the monthly Sunflower Comedy Club which attracts big names from the Irish and UK comedy circuits.
65 Union Street, Belfast – Tel: 028 9023 2474
