Out
n About Walk*
Sunday, 27th April
The next walk takes place on this date, so put a note in
your diary if you are interested. Neil has provided us with the following
details:
DATE : Sunday 27th April
MEETING TIME: We will leave at 10:30 am sharp. We
cannot afford to hang around so be on time.
MEETING LOCATION: Parliament car park.
STARTING LOCATION: Leitrim Lodge Picnic Area (22456)
WALK DISTANCE: 8 miles
TERRAIN: Forest and rugged hills. The walks begins on
a forest path, but we soon get off the beaten track.
Some parts are very very boggy - so you will get your
boots wet and muddy!!
DIFFICULTY: Moderate/Difficult
EQUIPMENT: Walking boots are required. Water proofs
and warm clothes should be bought as the weather can
change very quickly. You should also bring a packed
lunch and water.
OTHER INFO: On this occasion dogs should NOT be
brought along. At the beginning of the walk there is a big sign
saying "NO DOGS BEYOND THIS POINT". There are lots of sheep along
the path and in the general
area of the walk. As usual, when sharing cars the passengers are expected
to contribute towards the fuel costs.
WALK DESCRIPTION (The Mournes Walks - Paddy Dillon)
"There are some interesting little walks around Leitrim and at the top of
Kilbroney Valley. The Ulster way passes through these hills, but
generally stays quite low. It is of course followed through
attractive stands of pines into denser forest, then... to follow tracks
high on the slopes of Tievedockaragh. After crossing Batt's Wall the route
remains high to pass interesting rocky tors at Pierce's Castle and
Tornamrock, followed by an ascent of the domed Rocky Mountain. The
circuit is accomplished in the shadow of the higher mountains such as
Eagle Mountain and Shanlieve..."
