Queer Space was set up in January 1998 for the promotion of LGBT visibility, resources, networking and communication within our community. It is run on a collective basis where everyone is equal & welcome to participate at whatever level they want to, from helping with the administration to socialising.
Everyone is invited to put time, resources & ideas into running and transforming Queer Space. The theory is that people can make it what they want:
- If you think it should be bigger, help make it bigger.
- If you think it should host a particular project or event, arrange it!
Volunteers run Queer Space in an unbureaucratic way, following principles outlined in a ‘mission statement’, designed to ensure that the organisation is inclusive & community driven, providing a safe, alcohol & drug free haven.
Not only a ‘social space’, Queer Space believes in supporting the work, campaigns, events etc run by and for the LGBT community. Queer Space aims to be a friendly, welcome alternative to the bar culture that many LGBT people find intimidating and Queer Space is used by people from all social backgrounds & ages.
The collective meets every 1st & 3rd Saturday of every month from 2.30 – 3.30 in the Belfast LGBT Centre Community Room, located on the 3rd floor, 23 – 31 Waring Street, Belfast BT1 2DX. These are community meetings which are open to everyone.
Many events have been organised ranging form workshops, exhibitions, debates, tours, talk & video nights, social outings, ongoing projects & even weekends away. Anyone can get involved by coming along to the community meetings, helping to organise or even just supporting our wide range of events and projects.
We run a popular social space after our meetings every 1st & 3rd Saturday 3.30 to 6 pm, people drop in at ‘In Space’ to catch up with friends old & new over a cup of fair trade coffee, its friendly & social… all are welcome.
